Research Interests


I am interested in most aspects of the Interstellar Medium, with emphasis on its cool compenents (HI and H2 gas and the dust mixed with them). I take special interest in studying the properties of the molecular gas via mm/sub-mm CO and HCN lines as well as dust continuum in the extreme environments of starbursts in the local and the distant Universe. For this reason me and several collaborators have initiated the largest CO and HCN multi-transition extragalactic line survey with the JCMT and the IRAM 30-m telescope (>250 hours of telescope time). In theory I now develop a novel and much better approach towards a more physical representation of star formation in numerical models of galaxies, also suitable for applications in semi-analytical models of structure formation.
